CDF之声 |英国保诚集团执行总裁韦立思：中国的伟大发展进程才刚开始
第二十届中国发展高层论坛将于3月23-25日举行。本届论坛增设了“CDF之声”(CDF Voice) 栏目，向国内公众和国际社会传递论坛与会代表的观点和心声。今天发声的是英国保诚集团执行总裁韦立思（Michael Wells）。
1848年，英国保诚集团成立于伦敦。
2000年，英国保诚首次踏足中国市场，与中信集团联合创建的中信保诚人寿保险有限公司，是首家中英保险合资企业。
时至今日，中信保诚人寿业务已遍及中国87个城市。英国保诚集团执行总裁韦立思（Michael Wells）说，中国是英国保诚全球战略的核心。

2000年，英国保诚开始踏足中国市场，也就是中国发展高层论坛成立之后的一年。中信保诚人寿保险有限公司成立于广州，是首家中英保险合资企业。
时至今日，中信保诚人寿业务已遍及87个城市、代理人和雇员人数已超过50,000人、服务超过130万名客户。
不少最创新的保险技术理念源自中国，而英国保诚在中国的业务已拥有区域中其中一个最高水平的数字化平台。
为了更好地服务我们的客户，英国保诚目前正向亚洲及亚洲以外的市场分享我们的中国业务经验。
90年代中期，我第一次踏足中国，也即是英国保诚初涉中国市场的时候，当时，我见证了许多小城镇转化成支持数百万家庭福祉的大型发达城市，我亲眼目睹了基础设施的飞速发展，从高速铁路到高速宽频传输，连系了千千万万的人民以致企业。
数亿人得以摆脱贫困。尽管这项任务尚未完成，但这已是历史上一项非凡的成就，也许是我一生中见到最重要的社会变革。
在过去的四十年间，中国经济开放为这一成就做出了卓越的贡献。
我非常高兴中国政府继续坚定地推动改革进程，鼓励外商来华投资。
中国是英国保诚全球战略的核心。
我们看见，中国家庭的长期储蓄和保障需求仍未得到充分满足。我们能为这些家庭服务。中信保诚在中国的业务覆盖20个省市，其人口占中国总人口的四分之三。
英国保诚继续努力提升我们的数位化能力，以便我们能为客户提供更全面的服务，并支持他们的长期健康和财富。
英国保诚全力支持中国政府加强社会福利的愿景。中国政府设定了宏伟的目标，以期最大限度地发挥中国保险业的价值。
英国保诚计划积极地扩大中国的市场份额，接触未得到长期储蓄和保障服务的居民。

2019年中国发展高层论坛有想分享的话吗？
中国发展高层论坛在加强中国与世界其他地区之间的联系和理解方面做出了重大贡献。
我个人非常赞赏中国发展高层论坛促进这种加深企业与决策者之间相互理解、开诚布公的讨论，这有效帮助促成了新的合作机会来提高中国居民的福祉。
中国发展高层论坛讨论关注话题涉及从基础设施，以至全球宏观议题，到探讨儿童的个人生活，以及例如企业所提供的资源如何影响他们的家庭。
中国发展高层论坛取得的成功离不开其二十年的坚持付出——我相信论坛即将迎来其最辉煌的时刻。
Prudential was founded in 1848 in London and has been operating in Asia for almost a century.
It was in 2000 that we began our business in China - just one year after the establishment of the China Development Forum.
CITIC-Prudential was the first China-UK insurance joint venture. We began with a greenfield operation in a single province - Guangzhou.
Fast-forward to the present day and CITIC-Prudential has operations in 87 cities; has more than 50,000 agents and employees; serves more than 1.3 million Chinese customers on the mainland.
Some of the most innovative ideas in insurance technology are coming out of China and our operation here has one of the most digitally enabled platforms we have in the region.
To serve our customers better, we are now sharing insights from our Chinese business with other Asian markets and beyond.
Over the past 40 years or so, what changes have you witnessed in China?
My first visit to China was in the mid 1990s - around that time that Prudential set up its business here.In that time, I have witnessed modest towns transform into large, well developed sophisticated cities supporting the wellbeing of millions of families.I have seen the growth of infrastructure, from high-speed rail to high-speed broadband - connecting people and businesses.
Hundreds of millions of people have been lifted out of poverty. Though this task is not complete, it is an extraordinary achievement historically, perhaps the most important social change in my lifetime.
In the past 40 years the opening up of the Chinese economy has contributed greatly to this achievement.
I welcome the government’s clearly stated intention to press further with reforms to encourage foreign investment into China.
What does your China business mean to your company and yourself?
China is at the heart of Prudential’s global strategy. We see enormous unmet needs among Chinese families for the long-term savings and protection services. We can provide those services. CITIC-Pru operates in 20 provinces which together include 75% of China’s population.
We are also investing in our digital capabilities so that we can provide a more holistic service, supporting our customers’ long-term health and wealth.
Prudential fully supports the government’s vision to enhance China’s social welfare.
The government has rightly set ambitious objectives to increase the value of the insurance sector within the Chinese economy.
We intend to participate actively in expanding this market, reaching out to people who are under-served and under-protected.
We are proud that CITIC-Prudential has been recognised by the regulator as best-in-class for our risk management capabilities.Last year Eastspring, our Asia-based asset management company, established a wholly foreign-owned enterprise in Shanghai.This is a further signal of our long-term commitment to the China market.
Are your confident in China’s future development and it opening up further?
As a long-term investor, Prudential is committed to contributing to China’s continued economic and social development.
We understand how important the insurance and asset management industries are to the Chinese economy, how they provide stability, security, employment and capital that drive long-term growth.
Prudential is ready to do more to invest in the real economy, in important long term projects such as Belt and Road infrastructure initiatives.
Despite the extraordinary achievements of the past four decades, in our view China’s exciting development journey has still barely begun.
And so too has Prudential’s own journey in China.
What do you want to say to the CDF 2019 as it celebrates its 20th birthday?
The China Development Forum has a proven track record building greater connections and understanding between China and the rest of the world.
And I personally value the way the CDF sponsors the kind of candid debate that builds deeper mutual understanding between businesses and policymakers.
This ultimately creates new collaborations to improve the wellbeing of the Chinese people.
It is a perfect example of how a day at the China Development Forum can include key infrastructure and global, even macro level issues and then a session on the individual life of a child and how resources like the companies present can impact that family.
The success of the China Development Forum is a credit to 20 years of hard work – but I am confident that the most productive years of the CDF still lie ahead.
